WENATCHEE – Chelan County PUD Commissioners were briefed this week on new bitcoin mining security measures being implemented to address what they describe as “belligerent behavior”.
Its reported that PUD employees in the field and those in the office who are handling issues related to high density load service have encountered an increasing number of upset customers and potential customers.
Issues include disconnecting power for unauthorized cryptocurrency operations and/or telling people that new HDL service won’t be extended during the application moratorium. In some cases people can get agitated and argumentative.
Aside from the security concerns, bitcoin mining issues, have overwhelmed staff in several areas. At their Monday meeting the Commissioners got an overview of the first quarter District Performance Plan which showed the impacts cryptocurrency response has had on the PUD’s original workload plans.
PUD Commissioners next meeting on the 14th will include a public hearing on the bitcoin mining application moratorium.
